Charles A. Spillman, CPA

Charlie is CEO and owner of several companies that give him broad exposure to numerous business opportunities. In manufacturing, he owns Robus Leather Corporation, Madison, Indiana that produces and sells a product called bonded leather, which is made from recycled leather scrap. The technology is not new. In fact, it has been around for at least 75 years. What is new, is its applications. When Charlie bought the company it was only producing primarily for the shoe and apparel industry, which has substantially moved off shore. Today, in addition to those traditional lines, the company is providing construction products, including floor tiles, wall covering, wall tiles, molding, and ceiling tiles. Also, they are producing and selling substantial product for furniture applications, both case goods and upholstery applications. Additionally, the bonded leather product is being sold for numerous other applications such as caskets, sport balls, book cover material, table protectors, tool box liners and accessories of all kinds. Because of this vision in product development the company has received the Governor’s Award for recycling excellence. Half of all production goes off shore, including China, Philippines, England and Western Europe, India, Africa, South and Central America. Further production goes to our neighbors in Mexico and Canada. Knowledge of logistics has become vital to this company’s continued growth.

In the financial services areas he owns two businesses that provide background and experience in order to successfully manage his other businesses. For 30+ years he has practiced in Indiana as a CPA. Early in his career he advanced to ownership of a local accounting firm. In the most recent 15 years, he formed and grew another CPA firm that bears his name, and serves clients in all industries including manufacturing, service and distribution throughout the world.

Recently, he has purchased an existing office in the Midwest, now located in Indianapolis and started a new office in Tampa, Florida that provide merger, acquisition and investment banking services throughout the world. The business is called Corporate Finance Associates (CFA) and has been helping middle market companies for 50+ years with 37 offices in the United States, Canada and 10 offices in Europe. Recently, CFA has been providing opportunities to domestic investors with emphasis on Asia and the Philippines. Non-domestic companies have used CFA to divest themselves of domestic holdings.

Within the last two years, Charlie has started a company called United Salvage Associates, LLC (USA), Indianapolis, Indiana to sell excess inventory, seconds and distressed merchandise to third world nations, that will not compete with first quality product sales. Initially, he used this organization for his own bonded leather company, but found that many other companies need this service also. Expansion was eminent. The revenues and tax attributes are very beneficial for all those involved, without the concern of self-imposed competition.

Recently, Charlie was awarded the “Global Business of the Year” for 2002 by the World Trade Club of Indiana. Also, he received the “Sagamore of the Wabash”, which is the highest achievement award given by the Governor of Indiana, with accommodations by both Indiana US Senators. On January 15, 2003 the mayor of Indianapolis proclaimed “Charles A. Spillman Day” for all citizens to observe.

He received a BS in accounting from Indiana University with thousands of hours in professional, continuing education. His expertise includes merger and acquisition structure and strategies, personal and business income tax, financial statement presentation, financial valuation, business management, and sales and marketing planning implementation. He is a member of the American Institute of CPA’s and the Indiana CPA Society.

His most coveted charitable aware is the “Abbey Hunt Bryce Award” from the Visiting Nurse Service, of which he served as their Board Chairman and other officer responsibilities.

Charlie and his companies exemplify local, small business entrepreneurism that reaches out to the world.
